105.9 the X's Mark Madden talks journalism, broadcast career with North Hills students

Well-known Pittsburgh radio personality Mark Madden visited North Hills High School Tuesday morning where he talked to students about his journalism and broadcast career.

The 105.9 the X afternoon sports talk host and TribLive columnist shared candid stories and memories of his career while offering insight to students considering a communications-related field after graduation.

Journalism students along with students currently taking CHS Media and Communications and CHS Sports, Arts and Entertainment Management attended. CHS stands for College in High School and the courses are offered to North Hills High School students through Point Point Park University.

Madden’s mother, Peggy Ann Madden, was a longtime English teacher and speech and debate coach at North Hills High School, and last year, he started a scholarship to be awarded annually in her honor.

Seniors who intend to pursue a career in speech and debate, communications, journalism and/or English education should apply as detailed here. At least two scholarships worth $2,000 will be awarded to two seniors each year. In the scholarship’s inaugural year, a total of $6,000 was awarded to four graduating seniors and Mark has said he would like to do the same in 2024.

This year’s application deadline is April 15. Scholarship winners will be announced at North Hills' Senior Awards Night to be held at the high school on Monday, May 20.
